What inspired you to become a Water Sommelier?

For me, water is the most emotional and exciting food of all. I have loved this element since childhood. My parents' house is on a creek and their vacation home is right on a lake. As a child I swam, surfed, sailed and my dad was an instructor in the professional fire department and my sister runs her own swimming school for babies and toddlers.

I myself trained as a chef and state-certified gastronomer. It was inevitable that I wanted to explore the exciting topic of mineral water, healing water and drinking water sensorially and also somehow see myself called to do so...

What is your superpower?

Fall down - Get up - Move on.

Can you share a memorable experience you've had as a Water Sommelier?

I have always been of the opinion that every human being is capable of perceiving, describing and evaluating preferences and clear differences when it comes to water sensors.

I had an experience with a famous TV chef in front of the camera for a ZDF documentary "How good is our drinking water". I was excited and of course my heart almost sank. We were tasting Karoo water from South Africa in front of the camera. The goal was to describe the purity and quality of the source from the South African desert. The celebrity chef said: "But it smells and tastes musty".... well, even I am at a loss for words... I tried to describe it with "earthy" and "terroir".😉

What is your favorite water and why?

Apollinaris is my "Queen" and Gräfin Mariannen Quelle GMQ. I have been professionally responsible for the sales of these two wonderful branded mineral waters in the restaurant and hotel business for 6 and 5 years respectively.

Please finish the sentence: Water for me is...

the basis of all life and is vital and elemental to the human body and its metabolism. It contains essential minerals and dissolved organic substances that affect taste and mouthfeel.

What do you believe is the future of the Water Sommelier profession?

I see my further professional challenges and my further professional passion in this, this is my future 🫶.

I love to be on the road in this industry and to inspire many people with this topic.

How do you think valuing water contributes to a more sustainable future?

Water is our most important resource. That's why it's so important to use it wisely.

What else would you like to share with the community?

My goal is: "To use our drinking water, mineral water and healing water more consciously in schools, colleges, clinics, universities and care facilities".

Proper drinking at work,

Proper drinking in the classroom,

Proper drinking in sports and spare time.

Personally, I am passionate about this vision and want to be heard more.

I see myself as an ambassador for mineral water.

Darren, thank you for the interview!
