Heartburn in pregnancy? 🤰

On the current occasion, I have been studying the topic of pregnancy and pregnancy discomfort for the past few days. There are various products and strategies to alleviate pregnancy discomfort. One of them is natural mineral water. Why and how water can help, I will explain in this article.

Pregnancy baby belly

Although every pregnancy is unique and not every woman experiences the same discomfort or in the same intensity, the discomfort is usually the same.

  • Cramps,

  • fatigue,

  • dizziness,

  • headaches,

  • nausea,

  • indigestion, and

  • heartburn.

So what or how can natural mineral water help?

Cramps:

To prevent cramps, magnesium in powder or tablet form is usually recommended. Among other things, magnesium relaxes the muscles. Alternatively, a natural mineral water with a high magnesium content can be used. Mineral water is considered high in magnesium if it contains more than 50 mg of magnesium per liter. In Europe, there are many waters that contain significantly more magnesium, such as Nürburg Quelle (241 mg per liter) from Germany, Rogaska from Slovenia (1,030 mg per liter), Magnesia from Austria (170 mg per liter), or Eptinger from Switzerland (107 mg per liter). Magnesium-rich mineral water can be absorbed directly through the gastrointestinal tract and does not need to be digested first.

Fatigue, headache and dizziness:

When the body lacks water and becomes dehydrated, it can increase or trigger fatigue, headaches and dizziness. Therefore, it is important to drink enough water throughout the day to avoid dehydration. Again, magnesium can additionally help reduce fatigue.

Nausea and vomiting:

Drinking is a very important issue when vomiting occurs. This is because the fluid and mineral levels are quickly disrupted. After vomiting, it is therefore important to drink in sips at first. In addition to tea, natural mineral water is a good choice, as it provides the minerals at the same time. Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and chloride are responsible for many important functions of the body at the cellular level and should be replenished quickly after vomiting.

Digestive problems:

Digestive problems can occur during pregnancy for a several reasons. For example, hormonal changes can make the bowel feel sluggish. In addition, physical activity decreases as pregnancy progresses. In addition to foods that aid digestion, such as whole grains and vegetables, water is also important to support the digestive system during pregnancy. Two to three liters are recommended here. It is best to start with a glass of still water first thing in the morning. Sulfate-rich water (from 1,000 mg per liter) can also help with constipation. Sulfate has the property of stimulating digestion. Again, there are many mineral waters that contain more than 1,000 mg of sulfate per liter. Ensinger Sport, Residenzquelle, Valser or Hepar are just a few of them. Mineral waters with a high sulfate content usually also contain a lot of calcium, which strengthens bones and teeth.

Heartburn:

I have already written about heartburn in one article before. Heartburn is not uncommon, especially in pregnancy. In Germany, about 35 percent of adults suffer from it regularly. In addition to high-fat and spicy foods, the consumption of sodas and sugar should also be reduced. Instead, smaller meals with plenty of nuts, legumes and dairy products are recommended. Studies also show that natural mineral water high in bicarbonate can help prevent or relieve heartburn. While 84.7 percent of participants in one study experienced a significant reduction in symptoms, the figure was as high as 89.6 percent in another study. Mineral waters with a content of more than 600 mg per liter are considered to be rich in bicarbonate. In Austria, for example, this is Sicheldorfer (3,456 mg per liter); in Germany, for example, Dauner, Römer Brunnen and Gerolsteiner have a high bicarbonate content. In Spain it is Vichy Catalán and in France Vichy Célestins.

In general, it is important to drink plenty of water during pregnancy because the blood volume increases and the body needs more fluids. Dehydration should be avoided at all costs. Natural mineral water contains important minerals that are essential for the body of both woman and child and can help with digestive problems, heartburn, as well as cramps and fatigue.

Since health comes first, it is always advisable to consult a doctor.

About Timo Bausch

My fascination with mineral waters began in 2016 during my training as a Water Sommelier. Since then, I have been exploring the characteristics and diversity of water. In addition to pairing water with food, wine, coffee and other beverages, I offer the creation of water menus for restaurants and hotels. Furthermore, it is also important to me to draw attention to the importance of drinking water.
